Questions to Peter Laurin, Director and Head of hosting services at Ericsson

Why Arthur D. Little?

I wrote my master's thesis at ADL and that gave me an opportunity to get to know the company and the people working there. ADL came across as a very professional company with high calibre people - a company among the top three management consultancy firms in Sweden.

What was fantastic about Arthur D. Little?
The people working there and their professionalism. At ADL, you meet a lot of people who have an exceptional drive and will to make things happen. My focus on TIME and S&O gave me interesting casework and opportunities to work with interesting issues at a high level. This gave me a very steep learning curve early in my career. During my years at ADL, I had the chance to work closely with colleagues and customers from whom I learned a lot.

What did you bring with from Arthur D. Little?
The ability to focus on important aspects and resolve critical issues. Communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal. The right attitude to problem solving – seeing problems as challenges and opportunities. Finally, the last thing that I brought from these early years of my career is how fun and rewarding it can be when you bring high calibre people together who have strong drive and you make things happen.

What have been the highlights of your career after Arthur D. Little?
After ADL, I co-founded a start-up company in the mobile internet business, which was later acquired by Ericsson. After joining Ericsson, I have had the opportunity to work internationally in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Philadelphia and the US and that international outlook has been very interesting. During the last few years I have been based in Stockholm where I have played a part in building up a new line of business for Ericsson within the area of Managed Services and ASP/Hosting services. I am now globally responsible for Managed Services Hosting, providing telecom services like Pre-paid, MMS, SMS, MobileTV and mobile music (incl. Napster partnership) in a pay-as-you-go model to operators. This means that the operators do not have to own and operate the services themselves but instead, we as Ericsson, own and operate the equipment and just simply sell the functionality. We have in the last 2 years built 5 centers worldwide and sold this concept to more than 80 operators in over 25 countries, so it has been a rather intense period for some time.

What are your interests besides work?
I have a passion for sailing and spend a lot of time with friends and family.

What advice would you give to a young consultant at Arthur D. Little?
It is a good decision to get into management consulting; it will give you a lot of valuable experience. Try to get exposed to as many different kinds of projects as possible. Make sure you have a long-term plan. And finally, don’t forget to have fun!
